Do you like cheese?

You probably do if you're from continental Europe, especially the French.

But well, the Thais do not really like cheese. Or said differently, Thais never tasted cheese when they were young and hence, are not used to the taste. And the smell. So they do not buy it and no cheese is produced in Thailand.

And  for cheese lovers, the only choice is the imported ones.

Les Thailandais n'aiment pas le fromage. En général, on n'aime pas ce qu'on ne connaît pas...Donc, il n'y a pas de production de fromage en Thailande, tout est importé, et donc très cher.

Et pour ceux qui lisent ce blog et aiment le fromage, un conseil, si vous venez en Thailande et aimez le camenbert, je vous conseille d'en emmener avec vous...

The Thai government, as any other government in the world, needs mre revenues in this time of crisis. More revenues to feed the US$ 41 stimulus package they just approved.

And one way to get more revenues is to raise the taxes on alcoholic beverages and this is exactly what they did 2 weeks ago.

For beer, excise tax went from baht 55 to baht 60 per litre, from baht 110 to baht 120 for white liquor, and from baht 280 to baht 300 for blended liquor.

So how much more are you going to pay?

Le gouvernement Thailandais ayant un trou budgétaire à combler a décidé ce mois-ci d'augmenter le taux de taxation des boissons alcoolisées.

Pour la bière, la taxe passe de 55 baht à 60 baht par litre. Pour les alcools blancs, de 110 à 120 baht et pour le reste, de 280 à 300 baht.

Mais que représente exactement pour le consommateur une augmentation de 5 baht par litre pour la bière? La bière, en Thailande, est généralement vendue dans des bouteilles de 66 cl, elle devrait donc augmenter de 3.5 baht par bouteille environ.

Since the little Thai boy, Keigo Seito, found back his father thanks to his story being published on the front page of the newspapers ( Keigo ), 2 more children came to the newspapers, asking for help to find their Japanese father.

An 18 years old girl, Narumi Hamada, from Chiang Mai, and a stateless boy, also from Chiang Mai, who was left with a neighbour after his mother died and his father, Masato Niimura, went back to Japan.

Le Ministère de la Santé Thai a déménti la rumeur qui circulait hier disant qu'une touriste allemande était décédée de la grippe porçine. Elle est en fait décédée d'une pneumonie.

Pas vraiment un démenti, en fait, il a toujours été dit qu'elle était morte d'une pneumonie mais qu'elle était aussi atteinte du virus H1N1 qui aurait compliqué la pneumonie et l'aurait rendue mortelle.

Je suis sorti de l'hôpital il y a à peine 3 semaines et j'y suis de retour.

Mais plus pour la même raison.

Depuis hier, je n'arrive plus à manger, je vomis, j'ai la diharrée et une forte fièvre.  Et je me sens vraiment mal, bien plus mal qu'il y a 3 semaines. J'ai mal de tête et mal au ventre tout le temps.

Les docteurs pensent que ce n'est pas trop grave, juste une infection bactérienne, mais par les temps qui courent, on préfère ne pas prendre de risques et je vais donc rester ici un peu, de nouveau.

Je suis dans une nouvelle chambre, à un étage où tout a été remplaçé. C'est beau mais j'en profite pas vraiment. Qui...

Une touriste allemande en vacances avec son mari et son enfant dans une station balnéaire de Prachuab Khiri Khan, un peu au sud de Hua Hin , serait décédée de la grippe porçine appellée aussi H1N1.

Ils sont arrivés le 12 mai en Thailande et, après une semaines de vacances, elle a ressenti des douleurs dans la poitrine et a eu des difficultés à respirer. Elle a été emmenée d'urgence à l'hôpital de Hua Hin et a d'ailleurs du être réanimée sur le trajet vers l'hôpital.

If confirmed, this would be the first dead in Thailand from swine flu.

The German woman, Mrs Barbel Wilhelmine, came to Thailand with her husband and child to stay in a resort in Prachuab Khiri Khan, not far from Hua Hin

After one week, she had chest pain and difficulty breathing and went to a Hua Hin hospital. But she was in a critical condition and they sent her to Samitivej hospital in Bangkok.

She never made it, she died on the way to Bangkok.

We are now waiting for the results of the analyses that would confirm, or not, that she indeed died of swine flu.

Le petit garçon a retrouvé son père, cela n'a pas traîné. J'ai oublié de dire que SM La Reine de Thailande s'intéressait aussi au cas Kato et voulait être tenue informée des progrès.

Et donc les progrès ont été très rapides, son père a été retrouvé et bon, est un peu mal à l'aise. Lui qui essayait, avec succès probablement, d'oublier qu'il avait laisser mourir sa femme en Thailande et abandonné son fils.

Il ne veut donc pas renconter Keigo mais lui parler au téléphone. En quelle langue? Je doutes que son fils parle Japonais et je doutes qu'il parle Thailandais...

In Phichit there is a temple, Wat Tha Luang. It is a nice wat regularly visited by tourists. And if you go there, you'll see a litlle boy, a 9 years old little boy. He will show you a picture of a Japanese man, his dad, and will ask you if you know where he is, which I guess only a 9 years boy can hope he will get a positive reply.

Today is a public holiday in Thailand in order to celebrate one of the most important day in Buddhism, Visakha Bucha Day.

Buddha was born, reached enlightment and passed away on the same month and day, i.e. on the full moon day of the 6th lunar month, which is usually in May and is this year the 8th of May.

Buddhists in Thailand and all over the world will pray, go to temple and make offrands to Buddha.

In Thailand, it also means that alcohol is not on sale today, in bars, pubs, hotels, restaurants, shops, in brief everywhere.

Un des endroits que j'aime le plus visiter en Thailande, à part la plage de Hua Hin, est le marché flottant qui se trouve à environ 2 heures de voiture de Bangkok, au sud-ouest, dans la province de Ratachaburi.

Et cela pour au moins deux raisons:

- Cela me permet de faire une balade en bateau, et j'aime beaucoup les bateaux et tout ce qui a un rapport avec l'eau

- C'est très coloré et j'aime les couleurs

Il n'y a pas vraiment de nouvelles Thailandaises intéressantes sur lesquelles faire des commentaires pour le moment, je vais donc commenter sur le nom de ce site, farangrakthai.

Quand Thaksin a décidé d'entrer en politique, il y a quelques années, et donc de fonder un parti, il a choisi un nom pour le parti dont il savait qu'il aurait beaucoup de succès avec les Thailandais, à savoir Thai Rak Thai. Ce qui se traduit assez facilement en "les Thailandais Aiment les Thailandais", et donc la Thaïlande. Ce qui est bien sûr vrai mais, même si cela n'est pas dit implicitement, peut aussi vouloir dire, les "Thailandais Aiment les Thailandais" mais...

No major news to comment about, so I'm going to comment on the name of this website, farangrakthai. When Thaksin, quite a few years back, decided to go into politics and to set up a party, he chose to go for a name that would appeal to most Thais, a name that reflects (or reflected) what most Thais agree with, i.e. Thai Rak Thai.

What does it mean? Thais Love Thais and sure love Thailand. But since it was at the time of the Asian crisis in 1997-1998, it also had undertones that were not that nice, i.e. Thais love Thais but do not really like foreigners. Foreigners are a problem, or could be a problem. Like the IMF, for example, at that time. A very appealing concept indeed, for Thais. And most probably the main reason Thaksin chose this name, an appeal to the strong nationalistic feelings of the Thais in time of crisis.
